Black History Month

This month is Black History Month- for some time now, it has been debated whether or not a "month" is needed to dedicate towards African Americans and Women (March). Why do they have to have their own months? Shouldn't people be celebrating diversity and equality for African Americans and women all year round? What is your opinion on this question? Should we or shouldn't we continue to have Black History Month?

  1. I often hear comments around school from students (predominately white) who think that there should be a white history month if there is a black history month. Let's face it. Looking through our textbooks, there is very little information regarding the contributions of African Americans throughout history and most teachers do not even review those little sidebars that do cover some of these achievements. I wholeheartedly believe that until that practice changes and we can celebrate the successes throughout the year like we do with their white counterparts, we should absolutely continue to have Black History month.

  2. I believe that this country needs to continue celebrating this historic months in February and March. Also, we should start dedicating ourselves to being grateful for what women and African Americans have done for this country. Without them, you couldn't be a teacher, Ms. Kavlick. My parents also wouldn't have their jobs, and I'd probably be in a different school. Both of these months should continue to be celebrated, definitely.

  3. I agree with the fact that you mention we should be thankful and use the rights we were given. I do hope people make something of their lives- since women and minorities of the past were not as lucky as we are in today's society.

  4. although it is said that we should not celebrate black history month but celebrate it all year long. This is not the case black history month should be celebreated as it is like a holiday although you should take the values you have at the holiday season and have them become apparent all year. People dont take these values to heart but for a breif time they have higher values and more respect this is why black history month should still be celebrated so people during this time will think of more then themselves and of others.

  5. We should keep celebrating Black history month since Its celebrating African Americans root's and accomplishments. African Americans barley get credit for anything and when you hear somthing discovered, created, or accomplish by them compared to a caucationsons, that is a big impact on the world. Other cultures have celebrations to like cinco de mayo or st. patrick's day and no they are not celebrated for the whole month but it is celebrated throughout that month. If you think about it Febuary isnt even a full real month its 28 day's and half the people in the world are worried about Valentines day...
As for women they should have a month celebrated due to the recongnizition of the leaders who fought for the 19th Amendment and to display how women can be in first place also meaning that they dont have to rely on a man as much as they had to back then. Women make up most of the world and were being treated like slaves to the man culture. No woman she be forced into being dependent...
Yes women and African Americans should be celebrated all year round but each month should have no more than to holiday's to keep the world intrest. Also i dont think people will take women or African Americans seriously if they were celebrated all year round since the accomplishments would be loosely inforced because of the longer time period given compared to having a month where the info would be quick and to the point.

  6. i think there should be more than a month for african american history and the history of women. when i look through my text book i see alot of white males and a couple of familiar african american faces. we never really spend time learning about african american history either, so i dont understand how there could be a debate about this. i think that a month isnt enough; the month we have just so happens to be the shortest too.

  8. All cultures should be celebrated throughout the year, but people are not just apart of one culture and diversity is shown when time is set aside for different people such as African Americans in February and Women in March. Those groups who have made a significant difference in the way society lives today are given a longer time for celebration. The individuals who made a drastic difference to society on their own are celebrated on their birthday such as Lincoln and Washington. These months are dedicated to the vast group of people who believed a reform was necessary in order to make life better for America.

  9. I think that black history shouls be celebrated all year around instead of one month. There are many books that teach about women and black history, but our text books today do not include most of these people. Both women and African Americans caused a major change in the American society by fighting for rights and creating opportunities for their people. All people should be educated on their own cultures.

  10. Although I am glad that this country has equal rights for every race and gender, I believe that there should not be one month celebrated for them. There are so many races and cultures that aren't celebrated in America. All cultures should have a chance to be celebrated through out the year except for just women and African Americans. Although they worked very hard to get to where they are in America today, they are not the only two groups of people who had to work hard in this country.

  11. i think that diversity should be celebrated every month and even every day. however, unfortunately, it is not. i think african americans and women should have a month contributed to them. i think it acknowledges them and their accomplishments that they didnt recieve for so long. in addition, having these months in their honor, in a way but not fully, makes up for the harsh treatment they recieved in the past. but, if african americans and women have months dedicated to them, why dont other cultures and races? many people from other races suffered abuse in this country as well. i think it should be celebrated as a whole, meaning every race or culture, or not celebrated at all because this leaves out the other cultures and races.

  12. I don't see any huge setbacks or benefits caused by having cultural months, though it is always important to keep a reminder of who helped form our country's history. As long as it's not hurting anyone i don't see the issue with paying close recognition to contributions we've had from African Americans and women :) interestingly enough, i also found this info while looking up black history month.. "Some critics, including actor Morgan Freeman, contend that Black History Month is irrelevant because it has degenerated into a shallow ritual". cant say i totally agree with Morgan there, it's just some food for thought on the matter

  13. I think there should be one month dedicated to celebrating diversity in general. Who's to say we shouldn't have a Men's month, an Indian month, a Korean month, a Children's month, a Hungarian month, etc. There simply aren't enough months, yet every culture should be celebrated.
