The New Jersey Budget and YOU- The Effects of cutting the budget on schools

Recently, Governor Chris Christie announced that his administration will be cutting close to $1 billion dollars in education spending. This is obviously going to have a direct impact on RV and approximately 600 other NJ public schools.

After reading about the budget cuts for school and other proposed cuts, comment on the following question:

Do you agree or disagree with Governor Christies budget cuts? What part(s) do you agree or disagree with? How will these budget cuts for schools affect YOU? Education? Do you have any other proposals that could be cut instead of education? Please comment!

  2. After reading Christies budget cut plan there are some things that stand out that upset me. I do give Chris Christie credit for finally taking a bold step and doing something about the debt in New Jersey. At least he isnt like every other past New Jersey governor who did nothing about the deficit and just did his time in office and left the problem for the next governor. But I do feel as though Christie is doing too much. It seems as though he is trying to get New Jersey out of all its debt by the time he's out of office. And I dont think thats the plan of attack he should be taken. He definetly should be trying to get NJ out of some debt but a little at a time, rather than all at once and drasticly change everything in NJ. I do agree with some budget cuts from public schools but not as much as he is doing. Education as we know it, is going to change and there are going to be negative affects. Because teachers are having to be let go, classes will get bigger and that means more students fighting for the teachers attention when they dont understand the lesson or need some extra help. And the teacher wont be able to get to every student and there will be some students falling behind. And that isnt far because every student deserves the same attention and education as his peers. One other thing that upset me about Christie's plan is that he took all unspent funds from schools and other organizations. That is not fair. People who have been conservative with their money and who have spent it wisely are being punished by having their money taken away. That unspent money could go to helping pay teachers salaries so that less teachers would be let go. That money could also go to help keep clubs and organizations in the school around that are being cut because schools dont have the money to fund them.
So in summary, I do not agree with every part of Christie's budget plan but I do agree with some of it. I feel he should take it slow in the beginning and if things are working, progressively make more cuts. Slow and steady wins the race, not an outright sprint.

  3. I believe some of the things that Chris Christie is doing, but there are far more things that I disagree with. First of all, I don't think schools and universities should be suffering so much. I mean, c'mon... $650 million! That's alot of money that he wants schools to give. However, I think that taking money from schools isn't a bad thing. It just doesn't have to be so much. Also, this budget cut that was recently passed affected my future and, more importantly, my brother's future as well. He is going to be a freshman next year. Do you know how many things my brother won't be able to do or experience? He was really looking forward to playing sports next year, but he can't anymore due to the budget costs. For me personally, I won't be able to go on any field trips that I really wanted to go to as a senior. I believe that Christie should cut more money from the banks and mortgage companies. The schools' students, who have NOTHING to do with the money debt, have to suffer because of what...Citizens paying too much money? It's not our fault! Why do we have to suffer? So, in conclusion, I believe Christie is doing the right thing, but going about it the wrong way.

  5. i am a jr in high school planning to go to college when i graduate. my parents dont hav the money to send me through school so i was trying to get as many scholarships as possible but they are limited because of the budget cut. im gonna b a senior next year and i feel as tho i am not goin to get the education i need b/cuz the teachers pay is gettin cut so i think they r not goin to care as much. my mom works for the state and it is possible that she can get laid off and there will b only one income comin in my house hold which is not gud at all because i have a lil brother that needs as well. i dont agree with a lot of what Christie is doin. all i can really do is pray and ask god to look ova my family. my mom always told me no matter wat happens god has the last word and there is nothin n e 1 can do about it.

  6. I strongly disagree with christies proposal. I come from a family full of teachers and this hurt many of them. The budget cut in schools caused some of my aunts out of work and they have families to nurture. My little cousins had to learn how to eat food wisely. What child should be taught how and when to eat as little as four years old? If they were starving hungry they had to still eat a limit as if they were on a diet. This is like the Great Depression but Teacher version. Also the budget cut affect many of my friends. My best friend is a bowler and have been bowling all her life. The bowling program in my school has been cut and now she doesn't know what to do for college since their were scholarships given to bowlers. It isn't fair due to the fact that she worked hard to get where she was and was forced to quit because their are no more bowling teams nor scholarships for it. Her future she had planned was ruied. As I get older I'm going to need to apply for scholarships also to help pay off the college debt. If billions of dollars are coming out of colleges less programz will run and scholarships will decrease. It is not fair that children and young adults should suffer and get less oppourtunities than the past generations. Therefore I strongly disagree with Christie.

  7. I understand the position that Chris Christie is in is not very pleasant. Some of the things that he announced on the video were good ideas for cuts, but there are other big cuts such as education which should not be hit as hard. I do believe that education should be hit, because a lot of public schools like RV have many things that are not entitled to us. Yes cutting some activities will affect the students, but they are not a necessity. School has always been about education so the after school activies and sports are just extra, so I do agree with Christie to a degree.

  8. i think chris christie is doing his job. the government doesn't have an endless pit of money. they will have to eventually limit money somewhere. if money wasn't cut from schools then taxes would have to raised. either way, people aren't going to be satisfied. however, it is a disappointment how much money is being cut from schools. many teachers are losing their jobs. i think it's true that our country values education but not the educators. many activities and sports are also being cut. i think this will increase violence and crime in communities because kids will not have anything better to do to keep them occupied. it's a shame that scholarships will be limited now. college is very expensive and many kids rely on scholarships or the stars program to help them financially through college. i think this will discourage students from attending college because they just won't be able to afford it. in the end, i think the budget cut is somewhat necessary because money has to be cut somewhere but i don't think it's necessary to cut this much money from schools.

  9. I believe in Chris Christie methods a little bit because some change has to be done but i don't think it should be so much from schools. Its going to be way harder for me and my peers to get scholarships now and the tuition is going to go threw the roof. A lot of people are just going to join the military because they just don't have the money. I think he cut tax cigarettes higher and raise the prices of alcohol because those things people are going to buy regardless. Also I think some schools can be closed to. There are a lot of schools that are just right around the corner from each other and have little students. I see where the govenor is coming from but I think he should think about how this is going to affect the youth of America today.

  10. I believe that Chris Christie made the right choice in creating a budget to try to get the state of New Jersey out of debt. I do feel that it takes a brave politician to make such a decision; however, I do not think that almost a billion dollars should be cut from the public school system. It will create many problems for all of the schools in New Jersey, including RV. Not only will the obvious happen, ie. teachers and staff being cut, but many courses , activities and clubs are going to be eliminated or greatly reduced and this will have a direct effect on me as well as the other students. For example, I personally am a member of the cheerleading program, and now I will not be able to receive my fourth year varsity letter. My probable inability to cheer during my senior year of high school may affect my college applications and admissions. It is quite possible that the college admissions officers could interpret my lack of participation as a loss of interest in cheerleading, where in reality, the entire program is being cut. The reduction in teachers will also adversely affect my education in that our class sizes will likely increase, which will no doubt lead to more of an impersonal approach to their teaching methods. I feel that the governor’s choice of reducing the funding to the school districts is misplaced as we are the future of this state and the country. I would have rather seen less spending in his own staffing as I understand that salaries have increased by over $2 million alone since he took office in January.

  11. I agree with christie to cut amounts from schools because i believe alot of money is being wasted in programs. I do not agree with the amount of money he plans on cutting from schools, i think if he wants to cut school budgets then they should be a reasonable amount. I think to cut 1 billion dollars from education is ridculous, it is an idiotic move to blame schools(especially) in new jersey which is given the ranking of top 5 smartest states in the country. I fill with that amount he is putting alot at stack such as losing that reputation at being an excellent state.

  12. There is no doubt that budget cuts need to be made, however some of it is simply unreasonable. All aspects of government should be cut, including schools, but not to this degree. Private schools are receiving cuts which is ridiculous because they get an income from their student's parents. He also gave tax breaks to the rich, which is unreasonable. They dont have to be taxed more, but sure dont deserve breaks.

  13. Chris Christie is butchering education to the max. I know we need to cut back and save money, but this is ludicrous. Why would you want to take away from students who are America's future? Today you need the education in order to get into colleges or you will be flipping burgers for the rest of your life. I see where Chris Christie is coming from, but he took it to the extreme. (My sister was even thinking about being a special ed teacher, but now she is rethinking because business within schools are tough). I understand he needs to take steps to improve economy in NJ, but only take baby steps. Instead of jumping right to the gun and trying to reach such high goals or amounts, he should take a little bit of certain things (not attacking education)and see how they work. From there he should decide wether to increase the cut or keep it level.

  14. I heard that he's giving the cuts to the private schools. but how come that much? I still dont get why he's cutting the public schools budget.

  15. Although cuts need to be made, cutting everything is not going to give students a good educational experience. Participating in certain clubs and sports are what some students get scholarships for. Also, so many teachers will have to get laid off, which means more kids in each class. It's harder to for a teacher to communicate with their students if there are a lot of kids in one class. Maybe if he had raised taxes a small amount we would not have to cut back on so many education funds.
