Iran and Nuclear weapons- What is the role of the United States and should we fear this possible threat?

Iran and Nuclear Weapons- Does Iran pose a threat to the United States Tensions between the United States and Iran have always existed, moreso in the late 1970's during the Iranian Hostage Crisis. Since the end of the crisis in 1980, the United States has continued to keep an eye on Iranian policy. In the past, the United States has condemned actions, held economic embargo/sanctions against Iran, and has continued a policy of negotiations to try and prevent Iran from completing a nuclear program. Whether Iran is racing toward nuclear weapon capabilities is one of the most contentious issues challenging the West, including the United States and Israel. Even with UN Sanctions of the past against the nation, it is suggested that Iran is in the midst of developing a nuclear bomb. What would this mean for "The West"? Israel? The world? Your assignment: Read the attached article from CNN. When you are finished respond to the following two questions: 1. What is the role of the United States in this situation? Should we or shouldn't we take a more aggressive means of action against Iran? Why? 2. Is Iran a threat to the United States? Why or why not? Cite examples from the article that would make you agree or disagree. This is worth up to 6 points. Please write in complete senetences and as detailed as you can for full six point extra credit

  1. The United States and Iran have a history of arguments and wars. Iran is a threat to the United States because we have recently fought them and they are a huge enemy to us. If they are making nuclear weapons the United States may be their target as well. I believe the US should talk something out with Iran that will stop them from making this nuclear bomb. The United State's role would be to take action of this threat if they do not agree to terms that we, as well as other nations discuss. America should not be the only country to get involved and take action if they continued making this bomb.

  2. Like Eren said the U.S. and Iran have a bad history and since Iran is apparently close to finishing the deadliest bomb in the world we should act. I feel the US is right about Iran having a year or more left with making this bomb. The reason being is even if they get a working warhead they will still need a long range missile to make it to America which would be hard for them to create both the warhead and the missile under the inspectors nose. They most likely wouldn't try the bomb on another country near by because the U.S. is probably one of their worst enemies in their eyes because of all the sanctions we have placed on them. If we were to remove the sanctions that could make things even worse so that would also be a bad idea. Like Eren said as well America shouldn't be the only country involved America might be their bigger enemy but they could drop it anywhere so no country is safe especially if that bomb gets in even worse and more dangerous hands.

  3. I believe the U.S needs to worry about this nuclear threat. The reason we should be concerned is prior to the Second World War, European counties allowed Hitler to expand Germany’s control into the smaller countries surrounding Germany without much resistance. However, once he began to invade larger countries like France and Russia, the resistance grew and a world war broke out. We need to remember history and learn from it. When aggressive leaders and countries are allowed to go about its business without oversight, it leads to great problems. Today if we permit Iran do as they please a third world war is always a possibility. Furthermore, Israel is an enemy of Iran and tensions are high between the two countries. If the relationship escalates into conflict using weapons, the U.S. will ultimately get pulled into the situation. This will ultimately lead to Russia and China being pulled into the fight. Subsequently we are looking at a third world war if this is allowed to happen. I recommend we continue policing the region with our troops and try to resolve the issue through diplomacy. With a recent change in Iranian leadership, there is a better chance of using diplomacy to settle the issue and diminish the threat.

  4. I agree that diplomacy is the best policy- but we do need to watch- threats can be empty, but considering the conflicts that already exist in the Arab world vs Western world, this could be a potential reality of further conflict.
