S-X Offenders- Should they or shouldn't they receive a second chance?

A few days ago, California native Chelsea King, a seventeen year old highschool student, was found dead in a shallow grave about half a mile from her car. Chelsea had been jogging the local trails of a community park on Thursday, February 25th. That was the last time anyone saw her.
Convicted S-X offender John Albert Gardner was arrested in connection to Chelsea's murder. Chelsea had been raped and beaten, then killed and buried. John Gardner has had two previous s-x charges against him, and served five years in jail for the molestation of a thirteen year old in 2000. He was released only after five years-one year shy of the sentenced six years. He was recently charged with the attempted rape of a 22 year old woman (December 2009). The woman was able to fend off her attacker and run to saftey. Unfortunately for Chelsea, she was unable to.
This brings up an important question: WHY WAS THIS S-X OFFENDER NOT MONITORED ENOUGH? SHOULD THERE BE HARSHER PUNISHMENTS AGAINST THEM? SHOULD S-X OFFENDERS RECEIVE A SECOND CHANCE? OR IS A ONE TIME OFFENSE ENOUGH TO LOCK THEM AWAY? Your comments are appreciated!

  1. I believe that sex offenders should not be given a second chance unless the person that got raped or whatever was not hurt in any way. The person should be locked away forever and not allowed to ever come back to our society. However, if the person who got raped is still alive, the person should be llocked up for at least 7 years and given some type of therapy/treatment before they can come back to society. If they refuse, they cannot be released. This is my opinion, and it's fine if you disagree. But I believe in second chances. Now third chances, NO WAY!!!!!

  2. I dont believe in third chances for anyone--- regardless of the issue. So, what if a guy/girl was incoherent- drunk- and thought the other person gave consent for sex....should that person be put in prison for life? I think we have to evaluate the situation at hand. But I do agree sex offenders must go through a type of treatment.

  3. Sex offenders should not get a second chance. If he did it once, he will do it again. They should be locked up for a longer time considering 5 years of jail did not affect him in least bit. Even after jail time, his release should be stricter. Life long probation should be sentenced and they should be tracked wherever they go. They should also go through a type of treatment or therapy before they get released. Sex offenders need to be put through a harsher punishment.

  4. i dont believe that is a case of three strikes. I believe that it is more of a information thing. Once convicted a s-x offender should first be on parole discouraged from living around areas with many underage children. Also a psychiatric treatment and information to local police about the new neighbor living next door.

  5. Sex affenders should have a second chance only if they have affended one person and gone through some type of rehabilitation along with counceling. Everyone makes mistakes and deserves a second chance, but if that mistake keeps occuring consequences should be inforced.

  6. the law doesnt really check up on sex offenders at all. asll they do is make sure there registered on sexoffenders.com and they think everything will be okay when its not. it takes something as sad as this to happen inorder to get attention. this girl was only 17 yrs old, she had her whole life ahead of her. this scares me to death cause im a runner and i run to random places all the time. people like this are everywhere. how did he get off with only 5yrs?? i dont get it like are you seriously serious?? there should be no second chance, or thrid chance. "you fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me" if you can sit there and listen to the person scream, yell, beg and plead not to do it then i think its only fair to hear you beg and plead for yours

  7. I think that s/x offenders should not get a second chance, or at least set free into to community unsupervised. Research from csom.org shows that about 60 percent of s/x offenders reoffend. Most of them are released on probation or parole. The neighbors in these areas are notified but that dosen't make these s/x offenders less dangerous. They shouold be locked up bubt not forever.

  9. i think that they should have a second chance...but if they do it again i think they they go to jail forever...but the first time, i think they still should go to jail but it has to be long enough to learn some lesson. maybe 5 years is long enough..but 2 or 3 years..its not enough.

  10. S-x offenders should not be given a second chance if the problem is a constant occurrence. People make mistakes and do illogical things because of the experiences they may have had, but that does not excuse them from harsh punishment. If it is a first offense, six years in jail with counseling and 2 years parol after release should be the verdict. If it is a second offense, a more harsh punishment should be given. The s-x offender should be given a life sentence. Rape and molestation are serious offenses and s-x offenders should be punished harshly for their crimes.

  11. I believe that almost everyone should be given a second chance. The circumstances might be different pending the crime, for instance I do not believe that people who have commited murders should be given a second chance. In this case, John Albert Gardner had already been a second chance, before he was caught for the rape and murder of Chelsea King, he had two previous s-x charges against him, so this was his third chance. People who commit crimes like this should not be given third chances. Second chances are even a question. But if people like this are given second chances, they should be watched very very closely.

  12. I believe that s-x offenders should not be given a second chance. The majority of the time when they do it once, they will do it again. This offender is a perfect example of a s-x offender that was given a second chance and ended up killing someone. S-x offenders should not have to be killed, but should be put in jail for life. Giving them a second chance is only letting them go out and do it again.

  13. i think the first time someone is guilty of rape, they should get at least 10 years in prison. the sex offender should have more than enough time to think about the crime they committed. when they are released from jail, they should be put on probation, have to register within whatever town he or she resides in and a letter should go out to the people of that community informing them that a sex offender is nearby. if the sex offender tries to attack or rape a second victim, they should be put in jail for life. however, they should not be given the death penalty because i do not believe in that and i think they should have a lifetime of regret and shame for what they did and have to live with it every single day. the sex offender should not be given a third chance because if they did it twice, they obviously dont care and will strike again.

  14. Oh wow.. Tragic story there, definitely not the first rape/murder one i've heard similar to this either :/ I'm no judge but if a man is capable of being so cruel to an innocent jogger there should be some serious consequences behind it. He either needs some heavy jail time followed by close monitoring, or some kind of mental help. Sexual cases like this may differ but the same rules should apply to anyone commiting the crime

  16. Sex offenders or any other convicts should be monitored daily after being released back into the public. Sex offenders should be punished more harsher because it doesn't seem that they learn from their lessons after feeling free being released back into the community. I believe that if someone does something wrong one time they should still be punished because everyone know's right from wrong and being diciplined for their wrong actions will teach them not to do it again. People who commit crimes or hurt others do not deserve second chances. If you do wrong you deserved to be punished for what you have done. There is no exuse for a one time or five time offender they still commited a crime so they need to do the time.

  17. I think offenders shouldn't get a second chance unless the victim desides to drop the charges. Often people are accused out of revenge or spite. The cliche boy breaks up with girl, she cries rape to get even. If she comes to her senses wants the charges dropped, then they should be. Otherwise charges should be kept and continue to be public knowledge. It is the best way to ensure the safety of everyone

  18. i think that it depends on what the sex offender did to see if he or she recieves a second chance. like if a minor was to get caught sending nude pics of eachother they would be listed as a sex offender for the rest of their lives and i think that they should be given a second chance. But if it were something like rape then no they shouldnt recieve a second chance.

  19. even though im late sex offenders deserve a second chance every one makes mistakes an the crime is not always in black and white their could be sex offenders for sexting pics but yet their still a sex offender so a boy who is 16 an sext's shuld be stereotyped for the rest of his life no
