Arizona's Immigration Bill....protecting Americans or going too far??

Please read the attached article about a new bill signed by the Governor of Arizona. This bill, which is the first bill by a US State to demand immigrants legalization papers/federal documents of legitimacy, has caused an uproar throughout the country.

Read the article thoroughly, and comment on the following two questions:

1. Where do you stand? Do you support the bill? Against it? Why do you feel the way you do?

2. Do you think this bill, regardless of where you stand, will be effective? Do you think illegal immigration will begin to cease? Why or why not?

  1. I believe that the bill will be very good for the country, but I don't think we should kick out all of the immigrants in our country. I can't really choose either side. I support some parts of it, but I feel some other parts don't need to become laws. For example, the illegal immigrants in this country need not to be here. They are illeal for a reason, and they need to either fill out the proper paperwork or leave. If the people do not wish to fill out the paperwork, then yes, I am all for the bill. However, I believe the people that are here illegally should be given a chance to fill out the paperwork they need to so thatthey can stay in America.

I believe this bill will indeed be effective in this country. The population of illegal immigrants will go down because the people will be forced to leave if they coe here illegally anyway. Even if illegal immigrants were to come here somehow, they would eventually be found and forced to leave the country. Better not to even come here, right? So, in conclusion, I believe that the bill will be very effective, but I don't necessarily 100% agree with the bill.

  2. I think this is just a way to protect America against illegal immigrants. But at the same time, it it not humane to just detain anyone that is suspected as illegal alien. I am a legal immigrant and when I heard about this, it offended me in some sort of way.

I think it will both work and will not work. It will work because it is one way to lessen the illegal immigrants in this country. But what if people are against it? This will be a great issue to everyone especially US being the most diverse country in the whole world. And also, a lot of people living in America are also immigrants(legal) and it will also affect them in some ways.

  3. 1. i support the bill but i do think it is a smart ideal. since our country is in trouble and so many people are losing there jobs why are all the illegal immigrants stealing our jobs? i support the bill because it is not harassment it is just people being asked if they are from here and showing some kind of documentation to prove it.
    2. regardless i feel this law will not be effective and that
people will still keep illegaly coming to america because
"we are free people" and we have better pay and that wont
stop most people so yes i think the immigrant population willstay the same there will be no difference.

  4. Although illegal immigration is a huge problem in America, I do not think a bill will help get rid of it. People will want to come to America no matter what for more opportunities, whether there is a bill or not. I also think that making everyone who looks like they could be an illegal immigrant carry papers on them shows discrimination. Some people did work hard to become an American citizen, they shouldn't have to carry papers. Although I do think that it is unfair that American citizens who are rightfully in America have to pay taxes for those who are not rightfully here. Illegal immigration is a large problem in America, but this bill will not help cease it.

  5. I support this bill. I think that if illegal immigrants are living in this state and they are not paying taxes and etc they should leave. I think though if the illegal immigrants are already here they should fill out there paperwork to become legal but if they don't they should leave. I don't think this bill will help cease it though. Illegal immigrants are going to find a way to get across no matter how hard we try inn stop them. There are a great amount of illegal immigrants living in the US. We just cant kick all of them out. Although most Americans do work hard in pay taxes and healthcare, its kind of like these illegal immigrants are getting a free stay. So I do believe in the bill but I think something else has to be done to for it to work.

  6. i dont support this bill at all. It's racial profiling at it's best. How can you truly tell if someone is hispanic? They come in all shades and some even look white. What makes me even more upset is the president really hasn't said too much of anything about it. I'm all for state rights/law making but this takes it waaaay too far.

  7. i dont agree with this bill at all. i think that america can come up with better ways to matain the percentage of illegal immagrants. this bill is an example of racial profiling and is opposite of what america is about.

  8. Illegal immigrants shouldn't be in our country to begin with, hence the word "illegal". Although I believe the new bill shouldn't be accepted. It is a clear account of racial profiling and the government should know they are going to get sent to court many times over this. If no one wanted the illegals to enter the country, we have enough money that can be taken from the war on terrorism and put onto the war on immigration. There are more effective ways to accomplish the goal of decreasing the percent of illegals in our country. The bill will probably be effective for a little, until someone gets angry and sues. Since this is in only one state, it will not decrease the percent by much anytime soon.

  9. i have mixed feelings about this bill. i agree but disagree with it. it is a way to try to eliminate illegal immigration in our country. if someone is living in the united states without paying taxes, then they shouldnt be here. it's not fair to the legal citizens that have to pay a lot of taxes each year just to live here. illegal immigrants also take job opportunities that could be given to a legal immigrant. however, the down side of the bill is that it is racial profiling. it is singling out a specific race. some people may look more hispanic than others and some people who arent even hispanic may look it.
i think this bill will only be effective for a short amount of time. illegal immigrants are going to come here no matter what. the illegal immigrants will just go to a different state instead of arizona. so, i think in the long run it wil just decrease the number of illegal immigrants in arizona.

  10. well since i didnt recieve any credit from my last post i guess i'll do another .... I think the bill is not right . A large percent of people that live in Arizona are hispanic. not only in arizona but in texas nevada and all the other surounding states. it is wrong for the gov / police to stop sombody for the way they look. this bill is an example of racial profiling and show that prejudice still goes on in america. this bill also goes angainst the civil rights bill wich prohibits discrimination of race , gender, or sex.

  11. i agree with the new bill because illegal immigrants should not be in our country. They get all the benefits of living here without having to pay for it such as taxes and etc. I do not believe police officers should have the power to pull over anyone who may look like a mexican but they should have reasonable suspicion other than looks. That is giving police officers the right to racial profiling and that is wrong no matter who it is/

  12. i completely understand where everyone is coming from with the whole "illegal" thing but come on, seriously? granting officers the right to pull someone over based soley off suspicion is just flat out wrong. many immigrants are here in america for a better life. many of the places these immigrants come from are poor, and they have no way of making money. you never know if the person spent their last to get here. im not saying its right that they live here dirt free but, they take alot of the dirty jobs none of us would ever dare doing. they are an asset and a curse at the same time. america is suppose to be this grand place but look at what were approving? there is no sugar coting anything, its pure racial profiling and its embarassing. immigrants come from all around the world but since mexico is close they decide to target hispanics? your super buggin. people are still going to find other ways into the country.

  13. Tiger- thanks for reading your classmates blog entries! I was hoping some of you would do so- its important to see what others have to say and comment!! Make your voice heard! I will be adding the extra credit tomorrow afternoon and Genesis will be updated- it does not mean you have not received credit as I STATED 19089038 in class already. This topic on immigration is never going to die. Personally, I am not in favor of it and I do feel it is a form of racial profiling- I have a problem being a tax payer and paying for illegal immigrants children to attend school. I worked hard to have what I have and so have my ancestors who were also immigrants and came to America with $5 bucks and the clothes on their backs and they made it in the US. If people are here they should go through the legalization process- yet, a big difference between my ancestors and the "new wave" of immigrants today, is that they are on the SAME continent for the most part- crossing a border is much different than an oversea voyage. Its easy to get in this country, so why go through a lengthy process if you can cheat the system?
